KARACHI – In a significant development, the German government has confirmed its decision to prioritize visa applications from the business community of Pakistan.
The announcement was made by Rüdiger Lotz, the German Consul General in Karachi, during his visit to the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) headquarters. Lotz assured Atif Ikram Shaikh, President of FPCCI, of support in facilitating business visas for the Pakistani business community.
A high-level meeting took place between the representatives from the German travel industry and Saqib Fayyaz Magu, Senior Vice President of FPCCI; the FPCCI office bearer emphasized various areas of potential cooperation, including women empowerment, startups, research and development, vocational training, and business tourism.
Magu also lauded the appointment of Mahin Khan, a senior FPCCI member, as the German Consulate’s Focal Person on Trade and Investment for the Balochistan and Sindh region.
Acknowledging Pakistan’s significance as a market for German companies, the German Consul General highlighted their longstanding presence in the country and the region, ARY News reported.
During the interaction with Pakistani officials, it was disclosed that the number of Pakistani visa applicants for Germany has seen a notable increase in recent years.
Germany’s move to ease visa restrictions is in line with its broader immigration strategy, including the introduction of the “Chancenkarte” or “Opportunity Card.” This points-based system aims to attract skilled job seekers by facilitating their entry into the country, subsequently allowing them to seek employment locally.
There is a pressing labor crisis in Germany, with the country requiring an estimated 400,000 immigrants annually to sustain its economic activities and export levels.
It is a welcome development that at a time when Pakistan needs foreign currency and higher export levels, the goverrnment of Germany has announced prioritizing visas for the business community which can take advantage and contribute to the nationa cause besides increasing their own business footprint in the region.
