Pakistan confirms third mpox case bringing countrywide tally to four

According to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Health Director Dr. Irshad Ali Roghani, on Saturday, the third case of the mpox virus in Pakistan was verified at the Peshawar airport, and another patient was also sent to a hospital.

A possible case of Mpox was reported at the Karachi airport by Sindh health authorities in the meanwhile.

This occurs as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the novel Clade 1b variant to be a public health emergency, raising concerns throughout the globe.

According to Dr. Irshad, two tourists were found to be exhibiting monkey pox symptoms on Thursday by airport medical staff.

Both passengers were immediately taken to the Police and Services Hospital (PSH) for medical attention after being on the same flight from Jeddah.

The clade 2 type of monkey pox was the first case reported in Pakistan, according to the health ministry.

The second case of the previous week was also found at the Peshawar airport, emphasizing the need for alertness and quick action in controlling the spread.

We have taken all necessary steps to control the spread and are closely monitoring the situation, Dr. Irshad promised.

The Public Health Reference Laboratory confirmed that the patient had monkeypox after receiving samples from the patient, who was 51 years old and from Orakzai. The patient was receiving treatment at the PSH and was in stable condition, according to the KP health official.

“This is the third confirmed case of monkeypox in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the year 2024,” Dr. Roghani said, noting that no locally transmitted cases had been reported up to this point.

The earliest indications of the clade 1b variant’s dissemination outside of Africa are the one case each of Sweden and Thailand that have been confirmed thus far. To stop the monkey pox outbreak, the WHO has not recommended any travel restrictions, nevertheless.

The illness manifests as pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms. Children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems are more susceptible to complications, even though the disease is often mild but can still be fatal.
