First locally-made electric car to debut this December

Pakistan is taking a giant step forward in sustainable mobility with the launch of its first locally built four-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) in December.

This milestone follows a meeting led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, where the promotion of electric vehicles was the main focus.

Since 2022, 25 firms have been producing two- and three-wheeled electric cars under 49 licenses granted by the government.

Furthermore, upon clearance from the Engineering Development Board, Dewan Farooque Motors Limited started producing electric vehicles at its assembly factory.

The Pakistani market has been penetrated by BYD, a Chinese manufacturer of electric vehicles.

Authorities have been asked by Prime Minister Shehbaz to complete the Electric cars policy by November and to offer a thorough financial model for electric cars.

He underlined the need of strengthening licensing laws pertaining to EV production in Pakistan and emphasized the advantages of electric cars for the environment as well as possible foreign exchange savings.

In addition, initiatives are in motion to create a thorough plan for the electrification of Islamabad’s public transit system as well as to provide e-motor cycles to top-achieving government school pupils.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be installed on motorways and roads, and the government is thinking of providing reasonably priced power for these stations.

Electric vehicles will account for up to half of auto sales by 2030: BYD Pakistan
