The National Database and Registration Regulatory Authority (Nadra) is now providing data to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on wealthy individuals who avoid taxes, following specific demands from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to broaden the tax net and increase revenue.
Nadra has given FBR information about 195,000 wealthy Pakistanis. The data pertains to their bank accounts, real estate holdings, and registrations of luxury cars.
The FBR intends to pursue tax collection against these individuals because their extravagant lives suggest high income levels. There is compelling proof that these wealthy people are not paying their taxes.
FBR chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial stated earlier this month that not even the wealthiest five per cent of people are paying taxes.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered FBR to include affluent people in the tax system in July.
In order to implement tax regime enhancement measures and increase tax income in the current quarter of fiscal year 2024–2025.
Nadra has begun exchanging private information about wealthy persons with FBR today, following multiple attempts and at the request of the IMF.
Nadra’s move aims to support FBR in enforcing stricter tax measures. This step aligns with IMF’s demands to improve tax revenue and broaden the tax net.
