The federal government has decided not to take immediate action against unregistered VPNs, despite the expiration of the registration deadline.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has delayed action against unregistered VPNs after the November 30, 2024, registration deadline passed.
The decision to extend the deadline is pending guidance from the Ministry of Interior, which is expected to provide written instructions next week.
The delay comes in response to concerns raised by the IT industry, freelancers, and other stakeholders, who found it difficult to meet the registration requirements on time.
PTA sources confirmed that VPN registration would continue, providing temporary relief to users worried about service disruptions.
Previously, the PTA successfully conducted a trial blocking of unregistered VPNs, citing security risks and their potential to access sensitive information or bypass regulations.
Officials stated that regulating VPNs is crucial for national security and combating harmful online content.
The PTA’s final decision on extending the deadline will depend on upcoming discussions with the Ministry of Interior. For now, VPN users can continue operating without immediate fear of a crackdown.
