The Punjab government on Tuesday announce its decision to ban the use of mobile phones by teachers and students in schools.
This decision follows complaints about time wastage due to excessive mobile phone use by both teachers and students. Officials have revealed that the use of phones to record videos and share them on social media has caused further complications.
Under the new policy, all teachers will need to deposit their phones in the administration offices with violations leading to confiscation and departmental action. Moreover, the government has issued strict guidelines to ensure discipline and the welfare of students.
These include wearing school badges, displaying timetables, and enforcing a dress code requiring students to wear navy blue sweaters. Students who are not in uniform will be denied entry to the school.
Class representatives will be appointed to maintain order, and patriotic slogans will be displayed in all schools. Teachers will also ensure that registers are used for writing while also recording student attendance on the blackboard.
The Punjab Teachers Union has expressed support for the initiative noting that teachers already avoid phone use during school hours. They see the ban as a positive step toward maintaining focus and discipline.
The move is expected to improve the learning environment by reducing distractions and promoting student welfare.
