Bad news for Pakistanis seeking asylum abroad

The Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) program, introduced by the Ministry of Interior on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on August 14, 2024, has delivered remarkable outcomes.

Under this policy, business and tourist visas are now issued online, free of charge, within 24 hours to citizens of 126 countries. This initiative has led to a sharp rise in tourism, with hotels in major cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi being fully booked months in advance.

As a result, hotel rates have surged, with prices now reaching up to $250 per night. Industry reports show that online bookings have increased by 200 percent reflecting the substantial impact of the VPA in attracting foreign tourists.

Platforms like Booking.com and Airbnb report dramatic year-on-year increases in room rates with some showing growth in the thousands of percent in recent months. This tourism boom is not only boosting the economy but also creating new employment opportunities, increasing government revenue, and enhancing tax collection.

Airlines have also reported packed flights since the introduction of the VPA policy, further highlighting its success. Tourism experts attribute this surge to the VPA, which has made Pakistan a sought-after destination for both leisure and religious tourism.

The Ministry of Interior has stated that feedback from travelers has been overwhelmingly positive. To ensure smooth travel experiences, the Ministry is working closely with key stakeholders such as FIA, NADRA, and the Civil Aviation Authority.

In conclusion, the e-visa system is proving to be a game changer for Pakistan’s development, revolutionizing the tourism sector and positioning the country as a prominent global travel destination.
