Digital Communication Department to be set up

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has authorized the launch of a Digital Communication Department, with funds allocated to develop counter-narratives to combat anti-state propaganda.

This department will be instrumental in monitoring real-time online activities and improving the government’s capacity to detect and address digital threats. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s security by countering online propaganda that could harm national interests.

The Prime Minister has approved the creation of this department, which will focus on developing counter-narratives to combat anti-state messages spread via digital platforms. Additionally, it will work on enhancing the government’s ability to identify and manage digital threats in real time.

To support this initiative, 54 positions have been created within the Digital Communication Department. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has requested Rs530 million for its operations, and sources suggest that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is expected to approve the release of these funds on December 19, 2024.

This development underscores the government’s commitment to addressing national security risks from digital spaces. It will also improve the government’s ability to control and monitor online content that poses a potential threat to the country’s stability.

The new department will be vital in enabling the government to respond effectively to emerging digital challenges and protect Pakistan’s digital landscape.
