The federal government has announced a petrol price increase in Pakistan by Rs3.47 per litre and diesel by Rs2.61 per litre for the remainder of January. This adjustment comes amid rising international oil prices caused by US sanctions on oil exports to China and India.
Revised Prices Effective Until January 31, 2025
- Petrol: Rs256.13 per litre (up from Rs252.66).
- High-Speed Diesel: Rs260.95 per litre (up from Rs258.34).
These new rates reflect changes by the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) following international oil market trends.
Why the Petrol and Diesel Prices Increased
The primary driver of this hike is the surge in global crude oil prices. Last week, the Biden administration imposed comprehensive sanctions targeting Russia’s oil and gas revenue, leading to crude oil prices soaring above $81 per barrel—the highest since August 2024. These sanctions have disrupted oil exports to China and India, impacting global supply chains.
This marks the second adjustment in recent weeks, following a minor increase of Re0.56 per litre on New Year’s Eve.
Impact of Rising Petrol Prices in Pakistan
The ongoing increase in petrol prices in Pakistan underscores the direct impact of global economic pressures on domestic markets. This hike will affect businesses and consumers alike, increasing transportation and production costs.
The revised prices will remain effective until January 31, 2025.
