Punjab increases medical seats for ICT students

FSc Pre-Medical students can now apply in BS Engineering

The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards educational fairness by increasing the medical education quota for Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT)-domiciled students from three seats to 30 for the 2024-25 academic year. This move has been widely praised by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) as a progressive decision to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities.

The initial reduction in ICT seats had caused widespread anxiety among students and their families. In response, ICT students appealed to Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj, President of the PM&DC, for assistance. The PM&DC, in collaboration with the Ministry of National Health Services, the Standing Committee on Health, and other stakeholders, successfully advocated for the policy revision.

Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj commended the Punjab government’s updated decision, emphasizing its importance in creating a more balanced and equitable approach to medical education. He stated that increasing the ICT quota would ultimately strengthen the healthcare system by fostering a diverse pool of medical professionals.

This policy change is particularly crucial given Islamabad’s growing population and the rising demand for educational opportunities. The PM&DC reaffirmed its commitment to addressing regional disparities and ensuring nationwide access to education.

By expanding the quota for ICT students, the Punjab government has demonstrated the importance of responsive governance and collaborative policymaking in addressing challenges faced by underserved communities. This decision not only supports fairness in medical admissions but also empowers ICT students to contribute significantly to Pakistan’s healthcare sector.
