The Punjab Local Government and Community Development Department has completed land use and zoning plans (urban master planning) of 32 districts, designating/allocating the separate zones for residential, commercial and industrial land-use, according to an official source in the department.
Over the last two decades, Punjab has lost 225,000 acres of agricultural land due to unregulated urban expansion, with nearly 6000 housing schemes developed during this period. Of these, around 4000 were established illegally, reportedly involving municipal and development authorities.
Recognizing the adverse effects of this trend, the government has initiated district-wide master plans to regulate land use and prevent further loss of agricultural areas. These plans define specific zones for residential, commercial, and industrial development, ensuring new projects are restricted to designated areas.
The unchecked conversion of agricultural land has significantly impacted crop production while contributing to environmental challenges such as pollution and smog. To address these issues, a dedicated project management unit is coordinating with district administrations to implement the zoning plans effectively.
Master plans for 32 districts, including Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Bahawalpur, have been completed, with several already approved by deputy commissioners. The government has set February 5 as the deadline for finalizing and approving remaining district plans.
These zoning initiatives aim to safeguard farming, forestry, and infrastructure development while encouraging economic growth through centralized business districts and mixed-use zones. A central dashboard has been established to monitor compliance and promptly identify any violations.
Meanwhile, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) is advancing plans to create dedicated bike lanes, starting with Ferozepur Road and extending to Jail Road, The Mall, Gulberg, and Johar Town. These efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to balancing sustainable urban growth with environmental preservation and agricultural protection.
