Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated the province’s first fully electric bus service in the provincial capital city Lahore.
Punjab is set to launch a new electric bus service in mid-February to improve public transportation and reduce environmental pollution. The fleet includes modern buses with 30 seats, accommodating up to 80 passengers.
These buses come equipped with GPS tracking, Wi-Fi, USB ports, and ramps for people with disabilities, ensuring convenience for all passengers. For enhanced safety, anti-slip flooring and surveillance cameras have been installed to prevent harassment.
To support the fleet, nine specialized charging stations have been set up, allowing each bus to travel up to 250 kilometers on a full charge. A digital wallet and card system will also be introduced for cashless travel.
Initially, the service will operate on a 21-kilometer route from the Railway Station to Green Town, with buses running every nine minutes. Around 42 modern bus shelters will be installed, and the service is expected to accommodate 17,000 passengers daily.
The Chief Minister has reviewed plans to install solar fans, water coolers, and surveillance cameras at bus stations. Additionally, 70 bus drivers will receive specialized training to improve service quality.
Authorities are also considering the introduction of electric taxis in Punjab, reinforcing their commitment to eco-friendly transportation. Citizens are encouraged to take advantage of this modern and efficient travel option.
