PTA to approve satellite service licenses

To enhance telecom services across Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced the issuance of Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) licenses.

However, the issuance of these licenses will not include Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. These non-exclusive FSS licenses will allow companies to set up Fixed Earth Stations, Fixed Gateway Earth Stations, and Fixed Terminal Earth Stations. The licenses will also support the installation of necessary terrestrial transmission facilities for public network connectivity.

The draft for the FSS license imposes certain restrictions. The service can only be accessed through registered satellite operators. Additionally, the license prohibits activities like operating public switched terrestrial networks, providing mobile satellite services, and offering satellite-based services for moving objects such as ships, planes, and vehicles.

Licensees must comply with the regulations set by the PTA, which include the Pakistan Telecommunication Act, the Pakistan Space Activities Rules of 2024, and other relevant rules. The FSS license will be valid for 15 years and can be renewed if the licensee requests it at least two years before the expiration date.

However, the PTA has the authority to reject licensing requests and may choose not to renew a license once it expires.

This move by PTA is aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure and enhancing satellite-based communication services across the country. It is a step toward improving connectivity and expanding communication networks for better services nationwide.
