The Sindh government has commenced the distribution of solar home systems (SHS) to 200,000 low-income households across the province, as part of the Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP).
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced a major solar energy initiative, confirming that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has approved the purchase of 300,000 solar units for low-income families. The initiative aims to provide affordable solar power solutions, improving household energy access and supporting small businesses.
Each solar home system includes an 80W solar panel, a power management unit, a durable battery, LED bulbs, a pedestal fan, and mobile charging facilities. The government will distribute these systems with subsidies to make them accessible to those in need.
Murad Ali Shah highlighted Sindh’s efforts in renewable energy, including the solarisation of 600 schools in Nagarparkar and solar power projects in Sukkur. Despite challenges from federal policies, Sindh remains committed to expanding clean energy.
The CM also praised the success of the Thar Coal Project, which now generates the country’s cheapest electricity. The Sindh government is collaborating with China on wind-solar hybrid projects and is working on a dedicated railway line for Thar coal transport.
Energy Minister Nasser Shah confirmed that the solar kits are being distributed across Sindh’s 30 districts, with NGOs like HANDS and SRSO ensuring fair allocation. The selection process prioritizes families listed under the Benazir Income Support Programme.
The CM reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing 300 free electricity units per month to low-income households, aligning with the PPP’s manifesto. With international support, Sindh continues to lead in renewable energy expansion.
