Motorcyclist dies in crash involving minor driver

In a tragic incident, an underage driver caused a road accident that resulted in the death of one person in Lahore’s Shahdara area.

One person, 30-year-old Muhammad Amin, died in the incident. A case has been registered on the complaint of the victim’s brother. Police have arrested Hashir and filed charges against him. Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar took immediate notice of the incident. He condemned the increasing number of traffic accidents caused by underage drivers and ordered a province-wide crackdown. He directed officials not to allow unlicensed minors on roads under any circumstances.

The IGP also instructed authorities to take strict legal action against parents of underage drivers. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for overspeeding, one-way violations, and overloading. He further ordered the use of Safe City cameras to identify and stop traffic rule violations. This incident has again raised concern over underage driving in the province. In 2023, the Lahore High Court had ruled that minors should not be kept in lockups or charged for driving without a license. Instead, they must be released on bail.
