Karachi port reduces charges by 50% to boost trade

In a major policy shift aimed at greening Pakistan’s maritime operations, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Saturday announced a 50% reduction in port charges at Karachi Port.

The federal government has introduced new reforms to reduce costs and environmental impact at Pakistani ports. The aim is to support cleaner and more efficient trade operations while promoting sustainable economic growth. Minister for Maritime Affairs Chaudhry announced that port handling, vessel, and storage charges have been reduced. A planned 5% annual increase in these fees has also been cancelled. These changes will make trade cheaper and help reduce pollution from port activities.

The reforms are especially helpful for exporters of dry bulk goods and will also cut congestion at ports. According to the minister, faster ship processing and less idle fuel use will lower emissions and support cleaner supply chains. Chaudhry explained that this plan is part of a larger national strategy to decarbonize trade logistics and modernize port operations. The government is also working on integrating digital technology, improving energy efficiency, and adapting to climate change.

Other steps include forming a high-level committee to reduce the time containers stay at ports by 70%. Technology like drones and artificial intelligence is being used to monitor port activity in real time. The minister stressed that these efforts are in line with the Prime Minister’s vision for a greener and stronger Pakistan. He added that with rising sea levels and growing climate challenges, it is important to build a more resilient and environmentally responsible trade system.

The goal is to make Pakistan a smart and sustainable maritime hub that is ready to compete globally while protecting the environment.
