Strong rains expected in Karachi on September 9 and 10

The metropolis witnessed widespread rainfall on Monday, bringing relief from the heat as dark clouds, cool breezes, and light showers covered different parts of the city.

Light rain and drizzle touched several parts of Karachi, including Metroville, SITE, Baldia, Mauripur, Defence, Korangi Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Burns Road, and MA Jinnah Road, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The current wet spell is expected to last until September 10, with heavy to very heavy showers forecast for September 9 and 10. The PMD said the maximum temperature may touch 34°C today, while humidity stands at 91 percent and winds are blowing at 11 kilometers per hour.

Heavy rains expected across Sindh

Earlier, the Met Office predicted widespread rains with scattered heavy to very heavy falls across Sindh from September 7 to 9. Districts expected to face strong rainfall include Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Hyderabad, Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Jamshoro, Dadu, Kashmore, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, and Ghotki. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Nagarparkar recorded 80mm of rainfall, Mithi 51mm, Kaloi 30mm, while Diplo and Chhore each received 29mm.

Urban flooding threat in low-lying areas

The PMD has cautioned that torrential rains may trigger urban flooding in vulnerable parts of Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, and other districts. Authorities have urged residents of low-lying areas to remain alert and follow safety guidelines. The department also warned that more showers in flood-affected areas of Punjab could make the situation worse.

Officials explained that a low-pressure system from Madhya Pradesh in India has moved into Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Sindh. This has strengthened monsoon currents, bringing more moisture into Sindh and eastern Punjab, which is driving the current spell of heavy rainfall.
