Indus water enters the Qadirpur gas field in Ghotki

The management of Qadirpur Gas Field has confirmed that floodwaters from the Indus River have reached the platforms of its gas wells, raising serious concerns over energy production and infrastructure safety.

According to officials of the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), floodwater has reached the Emergency Relief Well (ERW) system of Block-VI located in the katcha region. As a result, 10 gas wells have been badly affected. Gas production from these wells has remained suspended for the last two days, confirmed RC Sukkur. The officials further explained that the protective plates installed around the wells have also been swept away by the strong currents. What makes this situation more alarming is that the ERW platform, which remained safe even during the 2010 super flood, has now suffered damage in this year’s flooding.

Qadirpur gas field, located in the Ghotki district of Sindh, is one of the country’s major natural gas reserves. The suspension of production from several wells at such a critical site poses serious concerns for the energy supply chain. Meanwhile, local authorities reported that villages in the river’s katcha belt are fully submerged, forcing families to evacuate their homes. Rescue and relief operations are underway, but rising water levels continue to threaten nearby settlements. With the Indus River still carrying high floodwaters, the situation in northern Sindh remains tense. Authorities are monitoring the flow closely while OGDCL teams work to minimize damage and restore production once conditions allow.
