Ayesha Omar faces backlash over Lazzawal Ishq

Pakistani actress and model Ayesha Omar broke her silence over the criticism that her upcoming Urdu-language reality show Lazawal Ishq is a dating programme.

The upcoming reality show Lazawal Ishq has stirred a strong debate online after its promo release. Marketed as Pakistan’s first love-based reality show, many users compared it to Desi Love Island, while others demanded a ban. The promo, shared on Instagram, opens with host Omar in a red gown, introducing viewers to a villa on Istanbul’s Bosphorus. Contestants, mostly new faces, are shown preparing for the competition. Reactions, however, were divided. Some criticized the format as inappropriate, while others defended it by pointing out that critics themselves watch foreign dating shows without objection.

Responding to criticism, Omar clarified that Lazawal Ishq is not a copy of Love Island. She explained that the format follows cultural values, where eternal love leads to marriage. She said many assumptions would be cleared once the show airs. The show is an official Urdu adaptation of the Turkish reality series Aşk Adası, backed by a Turkish production company. Filming began in Istanbul about 10 days ago and will continue for another month. Pakistani contestants, both male and female, are part of the cast.

Following public complaints, PEMRA issued a statement confirming it has no authority over the program since it will air only on YouTube, not on licensed TV channels. Omar described Lazawal Ishq as the first reality show of its kind for Urdu-speaking audiences worldwide. The format will follow international standards, where contestants pair up and compete, leading to a final winning couple. She said being chosen as host was an honor and an exciting opportunity. Lazawal Ishq is expected to premiere on YouTube soon, with anticipation and controversy continuing to grow.
