Another stretch of the M-5 motorway destroyed by floods

The Motorway Police said that damage near Jalalpur Peerwala has disrupted travel on the M-5.

Flooding from the Sutlej River has severely damaged the M-5 Motorway, forcing its closure for the eighth consecutive day. According to the Chief Police Officer of Multan, the eastern side of the motorway collapsed after a large crack appeared under intense water pressure, while the western portion had already been weakened earlier. Strong floodwaters are now flowing toward the Chenab River, creating further challenges for road authorities. Teams from the Motorway Police and the National Highway Authority (NHA) are on-site with heavy machinery, working to control the breach by filling it with stones. Despite their efforts, traffic remains suspended between Multan and Jhangra.

A Motorway Police spokesperson confirmed that the M-5 is closed due to flooding and advised commuters to use alternate routes. For travelers moving from Multan to Sukkur, traffic is being diverted via Shah Shams Interchange to the National Highway, where they can rejoin the M-5 at Uch Sharif Interchange. Officials have placed diversion signs along the routes, and traffic police teams are actively guiding commuters.

Authorities urged drivers to cooperate with police instructions and stay updated through official advisories before starting their journeys. Travelers have also been advised to allow extra time, as diversions may lead to delays. The closure of this key section of the M-5 highlights the serious impact of floodwaters on infrastructure. Authorities assured that restoration efforts are ongoing and that the motorway will reopen once safety is fully ensured. Until then, alternate routes remain the only option for long-distance travelers.
