HEC announces big changes in undergraduate degree programs

Higher Education Commission (HEC) has developed the Undergraduate Education Policy (UEP) 2020, which provides the framework for enhancing the quality of new programs leading to Bachelor of Studies (BS) degrees and Associate Degree (AD) in Affiliated Colleges and Universities, which is now being implemented.

The policy, built on the Undergraduate Education Policy 2023, aims to connect academic learning with practical skills needed in today’s competitive job market. Under the new rules, every undergraduate program must include at least three credit hours of supervised internships. To support this, universities have been asked to develop partnerships with private companies, SMEs, and public sector organizations so students can secure placements that match their areas of study. HEC has also encouraged the use of online internship platforms and remote working opportunities to meet modern industry trends.

Alongside internships, students will need to complete certifications in high-demand sectors such as information technology, healthcare, construction, finance, and the digital economy. These certifications must be obtained from recognized national or international institutions. The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development has already published a list of priority skills on the HEC website for universities and students to follow.

In some cases, certifications can count toward academic credit. For example, universities may allow certifications equivalent to three credit hours to replace elective courses if they align with course outcomes. This is especially relevant for computer science and IT programs, where international certifications are considered valuable for professional development.

HEC stated that this initiative reflects Pakistan’s commitment to preparing a skilled workforce ready for both national and international opportunities. By formally integrating industry exposure into higher education, the commission hopes to ensure that graduates leave universities with both academic knowledge and practical expertise.
