Israeli forces raided the Global Sumud flotilla carrying aid for Gaza, detaining several people, including former Pakistani Senator Mushtaq Ahmed.
The flotilla, made up of more than 40 civilian boats with around 500 passengers, was sailing to deliver humanitarian assistance to famine-hit Palestinians when it was surrounded by Israeli military vessels. According to organizers, Israeli soldiers boarded the main ship, Deir Yassin, and other boats, cutting off live broadcasts and communication systems. The detainees were taken to an Israeli port, where officials confirmed they will be deported.
Despite the raid, flotilla representatives confirmed that around 30 boats are still heading towards Gaza, only 46 nautical miles from the shore. They insisted their mission to deliver aid directly to Palestinians would continue despite Israeli pressure. Activists reported drones, GPS disruptions, and hacking attempts against their ships during the night.
The incident sparked global condemnation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the Israeli action, calling it unlawful detention of humanitarian workers. He demanded their immediate release and stressed that aid must reach the people of Gaza without obstruction. Turkey also condemned the raid, labeling it an act of terrorism. Amnesty International urged protection for the flotilla, emphasizing the safety of hundreds of aid workers from more than 40 countries. The interception adds to growing international criticism of Israel’s blockade on Gaza, as global calls intensify for free passage of humanitarian supplies and an end to military aggression in the region.
