The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snowfall in various regions of the country.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Islamabad is likely to remain cold and partly cloudy, while several areas of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan may receive rain and snowfall. Meanwhile, the PDMA has issued a weather alert for Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, and the Pothohar region, warning of severe cold and possible snowfall. Authorities have advised residents to stay cautious as temperatures are expected to fall sharply during the approaching weather system.
The westerly wave is likely to affect the country between January 16 and 18. During this period, snowfall may occur even in the urban areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, pushing minimum temperatures to extreme lows. Interestingly, early meteorological models also indicate a chance of snowfall in Lahore, a rare event that has not occurred since 1878.
Furthermore, Peshawar is expected to receive 15 to 25 mm of rain, along with the possibility of regular snowfall between January 23 and 25. In this phase, the minimum temperature may drop to around minus 5 degrees Celsius, adding to the severity of the cold wave. In Balochistan, a strong spell of rain and snowfall is also likely. The province may experience extremely cold, icy winds blowing at speeds of 60 to 100 kmph between January 21 and 23, raising concerns about travel disruptions and reduced visibility.
