IHC stops CDA from cutting trees in Islamabad

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been restrained by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) from cutting trees in the federal capital, which also requested a detailed report on the matter.

Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro heard the petition filed by Muhammad Naveed Ahmed, who urged the court to stop large-scale tree removal that is harming the environment and contributing to climate change. During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that ongoing tree felling violates the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act and threatens Islamabad’s ecological balance. The counsel emphasized that cutting trees without proper safeguards undermines the city’s green cover and climate resilience.

The court summoned the Assistant Attorney General to explain the reasons behind the tree removal. Subsequently, the Islamabad High Court issued notices to the Capital Development Authority, Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency, and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, directing them to submit detailed parawise replies and reports at the next hearing. The court adjourned the case until February 2.

Reports indicate that large-scale tree removal has recently occurred in multiple locations, including Shakarparian, affecting thousands of trees. The CDA stated that 29,115 paper mulberry trees were removed under a government-approved initiative, citing their role in causing pollen allergies.

Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik said three trees would be planted for every tree removed and that indigenous species are being used in the reforestation drive. He added that the paper mulberry trees were cut only after scientific assessment and warned that strict action would be taken if any violations of environmental laws are detected.
