NDMA warns of possible flooding in northern Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert for northern Pakistan, warning of rain and snowfall from tomorrow until January 24.

The heavy precipitation may cause rivers and canals to overflow, increasing the risk of flooding in affected areas. Officials highlighted that the Kabul River and its tributaries are particularly at risk of swelling, which could threaten nearby communities. The agency specifically warned of potential flood situations in Dir, Chitral, Swat, and Kohistan. In addition, the flow of the Kabul River is expected to rise in the lower reaches of Nowshera and at the Tarbela Dam, raising concerns about water management and public safety.

In response to the forecast, the NDMA has directed provincial and district administrations to maintain high alert levels. Authorities have been instructed to closely monitor sensitive areas, including riverbanks, low-lying settlements, and canals, to ensure any emerging emergencies can be addressed promptly.

Emergency response teams have been advised to remain ready, with rescue equipment and relief supplies prepared for immediate deployment. The NDMA also urged local communities to stay vigilant, follow safety instructions, and avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone areas during the expected heavy rains and snow.
