Punjab Sets wheat procurement price at Rs3500 per maund

The Punjab government has formally issued the notification for the Wheat Policy 2026, outlining a new mechanism for the purchase and management of strategic wheat reserves.

Under the new policy, wheat procurement has been fixed at Rs 3,500 per maund, while in 2025, wheat prices were linked to the open market rate. The government plans to purchase up to 2.5 million metric tons of wheat for strategic reserves this year. The procurement and management of these reserves will be conducted through designated purchasing banks.

The Punjab government will cover 70 percent of the financing costs, ensuring that farmers receive timely payments without financial delays. A tripartite agreement will be signed between the Director General of Food, the Agricutor, and the relevant bank to streamline operations. Additionally, government-owned warehouses will be provided to selected stakeholders free of charge to store the wheat safely.

Farmers participating in the program will receive 100 percent of the fixed price of Rs3500 per maund immediately upon sale, providing them with financial security and encouraging wider participation in the procurement process. Authorities stated that these measures aim to stabilize wheat supply, safeguard food security, and support farmers amid fluctuating market conditions. Officials have emphasized that the strategic reserve will strengthen the province’s ability to manage wheat supply in emergencies, price fluctuations, or unexpected shortages.

They also highlighted that proper monitoring and transparent procedures will ensure that the purchased wheat is stored and distributed efficiently. The Wheat Policy 2026 reflects the government’s commitment to protect both farmers’ interests and the public’s access to affordable wheat while reinforcing the overall stability of the province’s food supply chain. The implementation of the policy is expected to begin immediately, with close coordination between government departments, banks, and farmers.
