US President Donald Trump said the United States is considering a potential future arrangement involving Greenland and the broader Arctic region following what he called a “very productive” meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
He stated that this framework could benefit both the United States and NATO members if it is finalized in the coming weeks. As a result of this understanding, Trump announced that he would pause new tariffs that were set to take effect on February 1. These tariffs had raised fears of a fresh trade conflict between the United States and several European countries. By putting the tariffs on hold, Trump signaled a temporary easing of tensions while discussions continue.
However, Trump did not share any clear details about the terms of the proposed framework. There was also no confirmation that his earlier demand for US ownership of Greenland was included. According to diplomatic sources, no agreement has been reached that would give the United States control or ownership of the Danish self-governing territory.
Meanwhile, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen reacted carefully. He said the talks ended on a more positive note and confirmed that Denmark is open to discussing US security concerns in the Arctic region. At the same time, he stressed that Denmark has clear limits and will not cross certain red lines.
In addition, Trump said discussions could cover access to mineral resources and expanded security cooperation. He also mentioned his Golden Dome missile defense idea and suggested that NATO allies could take part in related talks. NATO officials emphasized that the main goal remains preventing Russia and China from increasing their influence in Greenland. Future discussions between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States will focus on protecting the region from foreign economic or military presence.
