Why did Cyclone Narelle make the sky red in Western Australia?

Scenes of an eerie, blood-red sky cast over the Western Australian landscape ahead of Tropical Cyclone Narelle have made worldwide news.

A powerful cyclone named Narelle painted the sky blood red over Australia. Strong winds whipped up massive dust storms in Shark Bay on Friday. Videos captured the shocking change as daylight vanished in minutes. The sky shifted to dark red and orange hues. Visibility dropped to almost zero.

Citizens in most regions found it hard to breathe. The iron oxide soil that was laid on the ground was blown into the sky by winds. This made the blood like red. Scholars describe the scattering of sunlight caused by dust particles, which inhibit the blue light and allow the red to predominate. The outcome appears to be unnatural, as though a scene in a different world.

The landscape was changing and eyewitnesses were amazed. People who know the area told how the strong winds blow. The air was filled with sand and dirt and had made day a twilight. It became difficult to breathe, and eyes were sore with the heavy dust. Highways were shut, and planes were postponed as rescue forces urged people to remain home.

Cyclone Narelle was also a category 5 storm and it hit the area at a speed of more than 250 km/h. It hit the shoreline, inundating lowlands and destroying houses. When the dust cleared, rain fell on it and compounded the mess. Rescue teams came to the rescue of the trapped families.

This rare event reminds us of nature’s power. Dust storms from cyclones mix soil with wind, creating stunning yet dangerous skies. Australia often sees such spectacles in dry seasons. Officials urge preparedness for future storms. Climate shifts may make these events more frequent.
