PTA Imposes New Restrictions on Late-Night SIM Sales

The PTA has ordered all cellular companies to stop selling SIM cards in Pakistan.

This halt will run from midnight to 6:00 AM. It applies to all authorized sales points, like company stores, franchises, and retail outlets. Operators should adhere to the timing exactly and make no exceptions. According to the PTA, the plan is to beef up the supervision of SIM issuance.

It aims to reduce fake or unauthorized connections and enhance national security. The authority warned that legal and regulatory action will start if telecom laws are violated. Retailers are allowed to sell the SIMs only during the allowed hours. Buyers must complete biometric authentication before activating a new SIM card.

This is to ensure identity and avoid service misuse. The PTA asks mobile companies to train their staff and update systems to meet the new timing. Operators should inform their sales staff and customers about the change. Police/law enforcement will also have the ability to verify compliance when required.

You can report violations on the PTA Complaint Management System. Try the PTA mobile app, the WhatsApp Digital Assistant at 0315-0055055, or call the toll-free helpline at 0800-550-550. The authority urged citizens to buy SIMs only from authorized outlets. They should also keep their biometric details updated.

Analysts say that limiting SIM sales after 7 p.m. could cut down on illegal sales. This may also help in finding suspects more easily. They note, however, that a seamless rollout requires good communication and close oversight. We need to balance compliance and customer service.

This balance can prevent long delays during busy times. The PTA’s instructions will be immediately effective. New timings and the verification process should be followed by customers and retailers. Those that are not compliant will be subject to the penalties as outlined in the rules.
