Turkish citizens to be granted on-arrival visas to explore Greek Islands

ANKARA – Greece is considering a one-year visa-on-arrival program for Turkish visitors to the Aegean islands, signaling potential normalization in ties between Turkey and Greece.

Last week in Ankara, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya and Greece’s Migration and Asylum Minister Dimitris Kairidis held talks covering various matters, notably discussing potential changes to the visa system between the two countries.

The announcement follows collaborative efforts between Turkish and Greek authorities, symbolizing a diplomatic stride towards fostering improved relations between the two nations. The decision to offer on-arrival visas underscores a commitment to facilitating travel and cultural exchange, breaking down barriers, and promoting tourism.

Moreover, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently met in Athens, marking a pivotal moment in bilateral relations that had suffered in recent years. During a joint press conference, Mitsotakis disclosed that Greece had received the approval of the EU Commission for the introduction of the on-arrival visa scheme specifically tailored for Turkish citizens. The program allows Turks and their families to explore Greek Islands (Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Leros, Kalymnos, Kos, Rhodes, and Kastelorizo) throughout the year.

Greece’s Ministry of Immigration affirmed the development and stated that the relaxed visa rules would bring Greeks and Turks closer. Although the complete details are yet to be finalized, preliminary information indicates that the on-spot visas will be granted and will be valid for up to seven days.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed Turkey’s support for visa-free access to the Schengen area, suggesting a positive change in the relationship between the two countries. Mitsotakis also emphasized Greece’s continued support for Turkey’s European accession process, advocating visa facilitation within the framework of the European rules.
