Chinese electric aircraft completes first flight successfully

BEIJING – China’s Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) confirmed that China’s self-developed electric aircraft has successfully taken its first flight at Qiando Lake General Airport in Jiande city.

The AG60E, created by China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Co.Ltd., is an electrically upgraded version of the AG60 sports aircraft, which first flew in 2020. With its all-metal structure and side-by-side seating for two, the AG60E represents a shift towards eco-friendly aviation addressing the concerns of the environmentalists.

According to China Aviation Industry General Aircraft, the aircraft is 6.9 meters long, with a wingspan of 8.6 meters, and can cruise at a maximum speed of 185 km/h, and the effort to convert regular planes to electric power is seen as a helpful move for mass adoption of electric planes.

Moreover, this modification involves replacing the traditional engine with an electric motor and a chosen power battery, aligning with global efforts for sustainable air travel. Rigorous testing ensures the electric system’s reliability, while safety and airworthiness are prioritized through technical research.

The Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) is a state-owned aerospace and defense conglomerate playing a pivotal role in China’s aviation sector. Its comprehensive scope covers research, production, and international collaboration, showcasing China’s ambition to establish itself as a major player in the global aerospace industry through AVIC’s multifaceted contributions and achievements.

China is asserting its technological prowess in the aviation industry, aiming to challenge Airbus SE and Boeing Co. In May, China’s inaugural domestically produced passenger jet made its maiden commercial flight from Shanghai to Beijing.

The move suggests that Western aviation rivals may face formidable competition from China in the future, marking a significant stride in the nation’s quest to establish itself as a key player in the aviation market.
