JAKARTA – In a significant development, authorities in Bali have confirmed that the country was set to introduce a tourism tax.
From February 14th this year, a new regulation in Bali mandates a one-time fee of IDR 150,000 (USD 10) for foreign tourists upon arrival, in addition to the visa fee.
Through the imposition of the tourist tax, various programs with a particular emphasis on initiatives related to culture and the environment would be launched.
The programs are set to tackle challenges such as waste management on the island, aligning with global efforts to promote eco-friendly practices within the tourism sector.
The move reflects Bali’s commitment to balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation and infrastructure development. By targeting traffic congestion and investing in sustainable initiatives, Bali aims to enhance the overall experience for tourists while preserving its cultural heritage and pristine environment.
The passport of Indonesia is not that strong but is ranked 66th spot as per the Henley Passport Index 2024. The visa-free destinations available to its citizens are 78 but the country is preferred by international tourists due to its pristine beaches and relatively economical rates.
Additionally, in 2024, several other countries are planning to introduce new tourist taxes. In the Netherlands, the tourism fee is scheduled to rise from 7 to 12.5 percent, and cruise ship passenger tariffs will increase from €8 to €11 per person per day. Meanwhile, Barcelona is also set to elevate its city tourism tax in April 2024, with the nightly rate climbing from €2.75 to €3.25. Similarly, Valencia is preparing to implement a variable tourist tax ranging from 50 cents to €2 per night, applicable across the region.
