Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi get 14 year jail term in Toshakhana case

ISLAMABAD – An accountability court on Wednesday awarded 14-year jail sentence to former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi each with rigorous punishment in the Toshakhana case.

Judge Mohammad Bashir announced the verdict while hearing the case at the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. He also disqualified the PTI founder for 10 years besides imposing a fine of Rs1.573 billion on the couple.

Earlier this month, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were indicted by the accountability court in the Toshakhana case.

The development comes a day after a special court established under Official Secrets Act sentenced Imran Khan and his second Shah Mahmood Qureshi to 10 years in jail in the cipher case

Imran Khan is accused of acquiring valuable gifts given by the foreign dignitaries to him during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022 from Toshakhana at reduced prices and later sold these gifts for $635,000. The gifts include a watch featuring model of the Holy Kaaba.

On October 21, 2022, the Election Commission of Pakistan declared that former Prime Minister Imran Khan made false statements regarding the Toshakhana gifts and assets under Article 63 (1) of the Constitution.

On August 5, 2023, a trial court sentenced Imran Khan to three years in prison in the Toshakhana case. However, on December 21, the Islamabad High Court, in its verdict, suspended the jail sentence but maintained his disqualification.
