BUENOS – The authorities in Argentina revealed that the country is planning to move its embassy to Palestinian city of Jerusalem in a major diplomatic shift.
The announcement was made by the President of Argentina, Javier Melli during his visit to Israel. The 53-year-old economist, who deviated from traditional political norms after securing victory in last year’s elections, was warmly received by Israeli Foreign Minister Katz at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.
Melli’s unveiling of the embassy relocation proposal marks a pivotal moment in bilateral relations, echoing the precedent set by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem in 2018 despite criticism from the Arab world and other rights activists. With leaders Netanyahu and Melli poised for discussions aimed at strengthening ties between their nations, Wednesday’s meeting carries profound significance.
However, Argentina’s Foreign Minister Diana Mondino later clarified that no official decision had been made and emphasized that relocating the embassy would be a lengthy process. Nonetheless, Melli’s eagerness to pursue this path underscores his unequivocal support for Israel, even as Argentina grapples with accusations of genocide and mounting international condemnation for its actions in Gaza.
Furthermore, Melli’s intention to label Hamas as a terrorist organization further highlights Argentina’s alignment with Israeli interests but this stance diverges from the position of other Latin American countries that have criticized Netanyahu’s approach to addressing the conflict in Gaza.
As the diplomatic landscape evolves, Melli’s bold initiatives and Argentina’s shifting foreign policy stance continue to shape regional dynamics and provoke international scrutiny.
Argentina is a South American nation known for its diverse landscapes, vibrant culture, and passion for football. With a population of approximately 45 million, it boasts a rich history and a blend of European and indigenous influences.
On the other hand, Israel, located in the Middle East, is a historic land sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. With a population of around 9 million, it is a hub of innovation and cultural diversity.
