China intends to roll out new visa reforms to attract global talent

BEIJING – In a bid to revitalize its economy and attract overseas talent, the authorities in China have unveiled sweeping visa reforms aimed at easing entry barriers for foreign workers.

The move comes amidst a concerted effort to stimulate foreign investments, which hit a record low last year. Authorities revealed plans to streamline visa processes, offering long-term work visas to expatriates and their families while eliminating entry barriers in key sectors like manufacturing and finance.

Jia Tongbin, an immigration official, announced that expatriates employed by reputed companies or engaged in scientific research would be eligible to apply for five-year visas, replacing the current annual renewal requirement after two consecutive years of residency.

Additionally, the prospect of permanent residency is on the horizon for eligible candidates, although specific criteria were not detailed. With these reforms, the government is aiming to attract top-tier talent, facilitate long-term investments, and bolster innovation and economic growth.

Moreover, as part of its efforts to revitalize its economy and to attract tourists, China has also relaxed visa restrictions for citizens from Lithuania and several other European countries. In December last year, citizens of Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Spain were granted visa-free entry to China for stays of up to 15 days.

It is noteworthy that the passport of China ranks 62nd in the Henley Passport Index 2024, with its citizens enjoying visa-free access to 88 destinations, indicating moderate global mobility and the country’s commitment to facilitating international travel.
