A glacial lake outburst in Gilgit Baltistan’s (GB) Ghizer district has once again unleashed flooding and caused widespread destruction, leading to the creation of artificial lake, officials said on Friday.
According to the GB Information Department, more than 200 residents have been rescued from flood-affected zones and shifted to safer locations in Yangal and Samal. Rescue 1122 teams remain on high alert as water levels continue to rise, increasing the risk of further flooding. Authorities have strictly warned people to stay away from the river. Deputy Commissioner Ghizer Habib ur Rehman confirmed that all relevant departments have been deployed to the site. Medical teams and the District Health Officer are providing emergency aid to those affected.
Officials stated that 63 schools in the area were evacuated as a precaution, and arrangements for safe drinking water have been made. The Gilgit District Administration has also issued a flood alert as the Ghizer River remains blocked for several hours at Raushen in Gupis Valley. The administration warned that the river blockage could burst at any time, causing a powerful surge downstream. Residents of vulnerable areas have been urged to move to safer locations immediately and cooperate with the authorities.
Emergency teams continue to monitor the situation closely, while the district administration has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to protect lives and property.
