Former cricket captain Shahid Afridi is clearing the air on a viral selfie with a pro-Israel group. The former star player came under fire on social media for allegedly supporting Israeli call seeking the release of hostages from Hamas captivity.
The group, North West Friends of Israel, had shared a selfie their chief members took with the star cricketer in Manchester, claiming Afridi had stopped by a vigil to offer his support for the release of Israeli hostages.
In his latest tweet, Afridi explained the selfie, saying it was “just a selfie with what I thought was a fan,” adding that he doesn’t “endorse your tweet.” The former cricket captain also asked NWFOI to take down the post “as it’s not accurate.”
Between criticizing the pro-Israel group and asking them to take down the post, Afridi expressed solidarity with Palestinians.
Calls for ceasefire in Gaza have only escalated in recent weeks with many rights group demanding Israel stop killing en masse.
