LAHORE – Authorities have announced that parade and flag-lowering ceremonies will not be held on Independence Day, August 14, due to some renovation work at the Bab-e-Azadi in Lahore.
The Wagah Border, which has been named after the last village on Pakistan’s eastern border, was declared an international border between Pakistan and India on August 17, 1947, under the Radcliffe Boundary Award.
It holds historical significance as it is the point from where a huge number of Muslim refugees entered into to Pakistan from India.
Later, the Bab-e-Azadi was constructed at this point in memory of the great migration.
Every year, special parade and flag lowering ceremonies are held on August 14 and citizen thronged to Wagah border to attend them.
However, this year no ceremonies will be held at Wagah border due to construction work.
The project to expand the Bab-e-Azadi was initiated in February 2024 by the then caretaker government.
