Kharian sees first confirmed MERS coronavirus case in Pakistan

Health officials have reported and successfully treated Pakistan’s first case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and health officials released a report on Friday stating that a 55-year-old man who had just returned from Saudi Arabia had tested positive for the virus.

The patient was a tailor from the nearby town of Kharian. He was employed for a Saudi business in Dammam. After arriving in Pakistan on September 3, he was hospitalized the next day at a Jhelum private hospital due to cardiac and respiratory problems.

The man tested positive for MERS-CoV before departing Saudi Arabia, and the WHO and Saudi health officials notified the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad of this. In the beginning, Pakistani health officials kept the case private, even from the patient’s physician team.

The patient at Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi was released from the intensive care unit (ICU) on September 5 after receiving sufficient care. He remained there for a few days.

After testing over forty individuals who had come into contact with the patient, every single one of them tested negative for the virus.

The primary source of MERS-CoV transmission from dromedary camels to humans was discovered in 2012. Of the 2,630 cases worldwide, reports have come from 27 nations, with Saudi Arabia accounting for the majority of those cases.

The fatality rate from the virus is approximately 36%, however this number can be overstated because mild cases aren’t being reported.

Concerns regarding MERS-CoV, which has demonstrated the possibility of human-to-human transmission, have increased due to this case. This is especially true in healthcare settings where the virus can spread due to delays in isolation.

In order to stop worldwide transmission, health officials have emphasized the significance of acting quickly in cases that may arise.

The virus is especially harmful to people who have underlying medical disorders like diabetes or chronic lung disease. MERS symptoms include fever, coughing, and difficulty breathing.

The initial symptoms of respiratory infections can often be confusing for other conditions, making early detection difficult.
