The provincial home ministry announced that the Sindh government has decided to form a committee to oversee the security of Jinnah International Airport, on Tuesday.
The remark from the Sindh home minister follows a suicide attack near Karachi’s airport that was claimed by the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and left two Chinese nationals dead and ten others injured.
In order to protect Chinese residents and interests, Beijing is concerned about the escalation in militant attacks, and Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong has called for more action.
The statement claims that the decision was made at a high-level meeting at the Sindh Assembly building, which was attended by senior law enforcement officers and chaired by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar.
The counter-terrorism department (CTD), the Special Branch (SB), the Special Protection Unit, the joint director of the Intelligence Bureau, Airport Security Force, and Civil Aviation Authority, the additional IG Karachi, the additional chief secretary (ACS) Home Iqbal Memon, the deputy inspector general of police east, and representatives from other law enforcement agencies will be among the members of the body.
According to the announcement, “the committee’s responsibilities will involve assigning security-related duties and creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for foreign nationals.”
The committee was instructed by the Sindh home minister to draft a thorough SOP outlining each institution’s and official’s duties for evaluation.
To improve security both within and outside the airport, Lanjar directed the installation of more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
