KARACHI — A bombing near Jinnah International Airport late Saturday night resulted in the deaths of two Chinese nationals and injuries to at least ten others. The attack targeted a convoy transporting staff from the Port Qasim Electric Power Company on late Sunday.
Those who are killed and injured are identified as Li Jun, Wu Chun Zhin and Li Zhiao. The blast was so intense that its sound was heard in Defense, Karimabad, and Jamshed Road.
Chinese Embassy in Pakistan confirmed the fatalities and condemned the incident as a terrorist attack, extending condolences to the victims’ families. The embassy has pledged to work closely with Pakistani authorities to address the aftermath of the bombing.
According to reports, the convoy was carrying Chinese engineers involved in a power project in Sindh province. In light of the attack, the embassy has activated an emergency response plan, calling for a thorough investigation and urging enhanced security measures for Chinese citizens and businesses in the region.
The Balochistan Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that they specifically targeted the convoy of Chinese engineers and investors. The group identified the assailant, Shah Fahad, as a member of their Majeed Brigade, who used a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.
This incident highlights ongoing security concerns in Pakistan, particularly for foreign nationals involved in infrastructure projects. The Port Qasim Power Generation project, which includes the construction of two coal power plants, is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a significant initiative aimed at boosting economic development in resource-rich Balochistan.
Beijing has advised its citizens in Pakistan to remain vigilant and has committed to ensuring accountability for the perpetrators of this attack.
