Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Kashmiri people in their fight for freedom during his address to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
He condemned India’s oppressive actions in the region, including extrajudicial killings, imprisonment of Kashmiri leaders, and forced demographic changes. The Prime Minister emphasized that Pakistan would not remain passive while Kashmiris suffer under Indian control, stressing the country’s long standing view of Kashmir as vital to Pakistan’s identity.
He urged India to end its violent policies and allow the Kashmiri people to determine their own future, in line with United Nations resolutions. PM Sharif also called on the international community to press India to respect Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. He highlighted that Pakistan’s quest for peace should not be mistaken for weakness, citing the country’s nuclear deterrent.
On Kashmir Solidarity Day, which is observed annually on February 5, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the Kashmiri struggle. The day was marked by public events, including solidarity walks and human chains, across the country, and a moment of silence at 10 am to honor Kashmiri martyrs. Rallies took place in various cities, including Islamabad, Mangla Bridge, and the Kotli and Bhimber districts in Azad Kashmir.
In a message, former President Asif Ali Zardari urged the international community and the United Nations to fulfill their promises to the Kashmiri people and support their right to self-determination.
