Govt plans Rs63 billion relief for electricity consumers nationwide

Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including K-Electric users, may receive a major relief of Rs63.94 billion as power distribution companies (DISCOs) have submitted a request to NEPRA for quarterly adjustments.

Pakistan’s power companies have asked for a major tariff cut that could bring relief to consumers. During January to March 2026, the companies recorded a reduction of Rs 36.83 billion under capacity charges. They also sought a further cut of Rs 11.24 billion under system usage charges and market operation fees.

In addition, the petition includes another proposed reduction of Rs 23.51 billion linked to incremental units. Together, these requests aim to lower the overall burden on electricity users at a time when many households are already struggling with rising costs.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, or NEPRA, will hear the request on May 19. After the hearing, the regulator will decide whether to pass the relief on to consumers. If approved, the move could reduce electricity bills for millions of people across the country.

This development comes at a difficult time for families and businesses. High inflation and expensive utility bills have already tightened budgets, so even a modest reduction could provide some support. Consumers are closely watching the case because electricity costs affect nearly every part of daily life, from household spending to business operations.

Power sector officials hope the regulator will review the figures carefully and consider the pressure on the public. At the same time, NEPRA will also look at the financial impact on the power system before making its final decision.

Overall, the hearing on May 19 will be important for both the electricity sector and consumers. A favorable ruling could bring some relief, while also showing how tariff adjustments can respond to changing market conditions and cost structures.
