Saudi unveils Hajj heat safety plan

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced substantial heat protection measures for the health of the millions of pilgrims preparing to perform Hajj 2025, amid expected extreme temperatures.

The campaign includes a safety guide with three main precautions. Pilgrims are advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours, wear head coverings or use umbrellas for shade, increase water intake to stay hydrated, and rest in cool, shaded areas to prevent heat exhaustion. They are also urged to remain calm and avoid physical strain to lower the risk of heat-related health issues.

Saudi authorities have implemented various heat protection measures at the Grand Mosque and other holy sites. These include shaded rest zones, cold water stations, and misting systems. Roads near sacred areas are being covered with white cooling materials to reduce surface temperatures.

Additional steps include the setup of air-conditioned tents in Mina and Arafat, distribution of water and umbrellas at heat relief points, and use of wearable sensors to monitor heat stress.

Improved crowd management strategies are also being applied to maintain safety. These proactive measures aim to offer a safer and more comfortable experience for all pilgrims performing Hajj during the intense summer months.Meanwhile, reports indicate that over 67,000 Pakistani pilgrims may miss Hajj 2025 due to delays caused by private tour operators.

The issue also involves PKR 36 billion in payments currently stuck in Saudi Arabia. Instead of refunds, the Saudi government has offered to adjust the funds for next year’s pilgrimage.
