Following the successful introduction of electric buses in Punjab, Lahore is now preparing to roll out its first electric tram to enhance public transport services.
Lahore is set to launch its first electric tram service from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig under a new urban transport plan. The tram, imported from China, has three interconnected units and runs entirely on electricity. With just a 10-minute charge, it can travel 25 to 27 kilometers and carry up to 250 passengers. The Transport Department has decided to run the tram on the extreme left side of Canal Road to avoid traffic disruption. Road width near bus stops will be expanded, and underpasses along Canal Road will be streamlined into a single lane to improve flow. Authorities also plan to shift the Jail Road underpass from the left to the right side of the road for better traffic management.
An underground road from Jallo to Harbanspura is also being considered to boost connectivity. The tram will operate like a subway but on roads, offering a modern and eco-friendly option for commuters.A pilot project has already started near Lahore Airport to test the battery-powered vehicle. The tram was assembled at the Ali Town Depot and will first operate as a trial run. The service will be free during this testing phase. If the trial succeeds, ticket prices will be introduced for regular use.
Officials said the project aims to provide a clean, efficient, and cost-effective travel option for the public. The initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize Lahore’s transport system while reducing environmental impact. This development marks a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility, combining modern technology with public convenience.
