The Punjab government has approved a plan to offer Rs100 billion in interest-free loans to farmers ahead of the wheat cultivation season.
Chairing a high-level meeting, she directed officials to reduce the cost of agricultural inputs so farmers can manage their expenses more easily. Maryam Nawaz assured that wheat farmers will receive full government support and will not be left to face challenges alone. She instructed that ample fertilizer supply must be ensured across Punjab before sowing starts. She also ordered a targeted subsidy for small farmers to give them direct relief.
During the meeting, officials briefed that timely sowing is essential for improving wheat production in the province. The government has already taken several measures to help farmers, including giving a subsidy of Rs63 billion in just two months. Through the Kisan Card scheme, farmers have also received interest-free loans worth Rs50 billion, helping them invest in seeds, fertilizers, and equipment without extra financial burden. Additionally, Rs13 billion has been provided under the Punjab Chief Minister’s Wheat Support Program to further strengthen farmers’ ability to achieve better yields.
The Chief Minister stressed that agriculture is the backbone of Punjab’s economy and that protecting farmers’ interests is a top priority. She said these initiatives aim to not only improve wheat production but also increase farmers’ income and stability. The new measures are part of a wider plan to modernize agriculture, reduce farming costs, and secure food supplies for the province. Officials believe that with timely support and proper resources, Punjab can achieve a record wheat harvest this season.
