In a tragic turn of events, eight local volunteers lost their lives in a massive landslide as they were taking part in restoring the flood-damaged Danyor Nullah in Gilgit, officials said on Monday.
Rescue teams are working nonstop after a sudden landslide buried several people in northern Pakistan. The incident happened while volunteers were repairing a damaged water channel. Eyewitnesses said tonnes of earth and rocks came crashing down without warning, trapping many under the debris. Emergency services have moved the injured to nearby hospitals, where staff remain on high alert. Police confirmed that four people were rescued alive but are in critical condition. Locals have joined rescue workers to search for more survivors feared trapped.
The landslide occurred amid ongoing heavy rains that have caused widespread damage in the region. Earlier, the National Highway Authority (NHA) team managed to clear the road at KM 161 in Jalkhad, which had been blocked by a previous landslide, restoring traffic flow. On the same day, NHA teams rebuilt the Looshi Bridge on a temporary basis after it was washed away by rain and landslides. The bridge reopening ensured continued movement on the route, which is vital for local residents and travelers.
Another road section at Tatta Pani, earlier cleared of debris, was blocked again by a fresh landslide. NHA workers moved quickly to reopen it, keeping transportation in the area running despite the ongoing challenges.
