Recently, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued guidelines for individuals who need to update their names in the database.
Under the clarified procedure, applicants must first compile required documents. A computerised birth certificate from the Union Council or Cantonment Board that shows the updated name is preferred. If unavailable, applicants may instead provide a NADRA affidavit form — Form C1 for a B-Form or Form C2 for a CNIC — and, in case of a change of religion, a certificate from a Dar-ul-Ifta. After preparing the file, applicants visit a NADRA centre. First, they obtain a token. Next, they complete biometric verification. Then a data entry officer records particulars, captures fingerprints and a photo, and prints a draft for checking. Corrections can be made before submission. Afterwards, the in-charge reviews and approves the application, and may ask basic questions about family details. Notably, NADRA has clarified that form attestation is not required for CNIC amendments.
Once approved, an SMS confirmation is sent and the fee is paid at the counter or online. The fee and timelines are: Executive, Rs2500 with delivery in 7 working days; Executive, Rs1500 with delivery in 15 working days; Normal, Rs750 with delivery in 30 working days. Finally, after processing, applicants collect the new CNIC from the same centre where they applied. Citizens are advised to review documents carefully, keep the SMS receipt, and avoid third-party agents, since the workflow can be completed directly at NADRA counters. Centres operate extended hours in busy seasons for ease.
