The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a new alert warning that heavy rain in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may lead to urban flooding, landslides, and increasing water levels in streams and rivers.
According to the alert, the districts most at risk include Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Buner, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, and Mardan. The authorities have pointed out that sustained rain in these areas might prompt landslides in mountainous regions, while low-lying towns may face urban flooding. The PDMA has also identified high winds and storms as potentially damaging weaker infrastructure. Specifically, electric poles, billboards, and solar panels all have weaknesses that disrupt everyday life and services.
In response, district administrations have been directed to remain on high alert. They have been instructed to ensure drainage systems remain clear, keep machinery ready, and activate emergency teams for rapid response. Rescue officials have also been told to stay in contact with local communities to provide assistance where needed.
At the same time, the public has been urged to take precautionary measures. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers and nullahs, and cooperate with local authorities to minimize risks. The PDMA has also activated its toll-free helpline 1700, which will remain available 24/7 for any emergency situation. People in vulnerable areas are encouraged to use this service if they require urgent help.
Meanwhile, light rainfall has already brought pleasant weather to Karachi, but experts warn that northern districts of KP remain highly sensitive during this monsoon spell. Authorities stress that timely precautions can help reduce losses and protect lives in flood-prone and mountainous regions.
