Punjab govt moves to create first anti-drone unit

Punjab authorities have introduced an advanced anti-drone security unit designed to counter rising threats from unmanned aerial vehicles.

The government has allocated Rs3 billion to establish a specialized anti-drone unit aimed at strengthening national security. According to official sources, the new unit will be equipped with advanced technology, including radar, jamming systems, directed energy weapons, and mobile response teams. Six radar systems will be installed to detect drones flying at low and medium altitudes, allowing security forces to identify potential threats in time. Jammers will be deployed to block navigation and control signals, forcing hostile drones to lose communication and either land uncontrollably or become disabled.

In addition, directed energy weapons will be introduced to directly target and destroy dangerous drones that pose an immediate risk. Mobile response teams will also be set up to act quickly, ensuring rapid interception and protection of sensitive sites and large public gatherings.

Officials explained that the unit’s primary focus will be safeguarding critical infrastructure, government installations, and public events where security risks are higher. The combination of radar detection, jamming, and mobile operations is expected to significantly improve the country’s defense against unauthorized drone activity. The step comes as drones are increasingly being used for surveillance, smuggling, and potential attacks, raising concerns for national security. Authorities believe that this initiative will not only strengthen immediate response capabilities but also enhance long-term preparedness against modern aerial threats.

With these measures, security agencies aim to minimize risks and reassure the public that sensitive areas will be well-protected. The anti-drone unit will soon become operational, and training for specialized teams is expected to begin in the coming months to ensure effective implementation of the new system.
